GIFTS OF BOOKS

The Foundation offers books, for which you may download the list,  to libraries and documentation centres, for the cost of sending them.

CONDITIONS OF ACCESS

The Foundation has archives (manuscripts, photographs, catalogues and so on) as well as a specialized library formed in part by the artist’s own library. The reading room is open to researchers, who must submit written applications explaining their reasons:

Request Form.

This library is mainly for in-house use; it is dedicated above all to the defence of the artist’s work and the campaign against counterfeiting and forgery. The staff is small, as is the library’s capacity. As a result, the library has no regular opening hours for the public.

Researchers are keenly recommended to first consult public libraries to have access to current books and catalogues about the artist.

Nota bene:  because the archives of the catalogue raisonnécannot be communicated to the public, the Foundation carry out research itself.

It should be noted that the Foundation is not the only party holding books from the artist’s own library. Other volumes are to be found in particular at the Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung, Kunsthaus Zurich, Winkelwiese 4, 08024 Zurich.

How to Access the Archives and the Documentation

The Alberto and Annette Giacometti Foundation is a private institution. Among its means of action, its statutes provide for communicating, to the public, works of Alberto Giacometti which it owns. The archives and correspondence it holds may be communicated on a discretionary basis.

In particular, the Foundation reserves the right not to communicate:

-information to do with owners of works which it does not hold;

-images of works in its collection which have not been made public;

-documents it is preparing for publication.

Access to the collections and the library is solely on request, and for bona fide reasons.

Requests should be addressed to:

Madame la Directrice de la Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti, 8 rue du Grenier Saint-Lazare, 75003 Paris. Access is authorized solely by prior appointment, at the earliest 15 days after receipt of the request.

Researchers are keenly recommended to first consultpublic libraries to have access to current books and catalogues about the artist.

No researcher may have free access to the shelves.

Researchers may not photograph the documents.

Only the use of pencils is authorized.

Any researcher infringing any one of these rules will be immediately asked to leave the library.

Large bags must be left at the entrance.

Documents brought in by researchers are checked by staff before they leave.

Photocopies of documents are made solely by Foundation staff. A request form is available on the spot to this effect. Photocopies received by researchers as part of their research at the Foundation may not be reproduced without this latter’s express authorization.

NB: Drawings and prints, as well as printed matter containing drawings, are held in the graphic arts room, and require a separate request for consultation.
