CONTEXT
The counterfeiting of artworks is one of the most lucrative forms of criminality. Boosted by globalization, market liberalization and the Internet, it has become a fully-fledged industry, now operating on a large scale and financing organized crime. Its global growth over the past 10 years also mirrors the rise in the values and prices of authentic art.
The proliferation of counterfeit artworks on the market is a serious issue. With more and more unscrupulous counterfeiters fooling expert dealers at art fairs and galleries around the world, the counterfeit art market is now worth several billion dollars.
Convinced of the need for a coordinated and sustained action against counterfeiting networks, the Alberto and Annette Giacometti Foundation has long been involved in issues related to the counterfeiting of limited edition artworks such as furniture, decorative arts, prints and of course sculpture.
Much-heralded cases of art counterfeits and forgeries have shown the necessity to increase artists' rights protection. Even though a number of art forgers were recently arrested, it remains crucial to continue to address the issue - notably in the art world, where the enforcement of intellectual property regulation is threatened by trends such as appropriation art.
Every year, the Alberto and Annette Giacometti Foundation dedicates a €10,000 sum to support an innovative project aiming at protecting and promoting artists’s rights.
