Figure as monument - Alberto Giacometti in Langtou
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, 79 works by Alberto Giacometti (sculptures, paintings, drawings, and engravings) are being presented in Guangzhou. This marks the second time in eight years that Giacometti’s works are being exhibited in China, and the first large-scale exhibition of Giacometti in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao.
This exhibition, jointly curated by ChunYangTai Art and Cultural Center and Fondation Giacometti, explores a unique aspect of Alberto Giacometti’s creation: his perspective on architecture. Giacometti’s deep interest in monumentality will engage in a dialogue with the traditional buildings of the seven-hundred-year-old Chinese village of Langtou, and the bold contemporary architecture of ChunYangTai Art and Cultural Center. Focused on four major aspects of Giacometti’s art, this exhibition highlights the architectural vision of the figure, the creative fertility of the apparent chaos in the studio, the essential role of the pedestal as a foundation, the cage as a structure, and the artist’s constant play with space and emptiness, in dialogue with the photographs of Zeng Li, a Chinese artist and photographer.
Curators: Emilie Bouvard (Fondation Giacometti) and Yung Ho Chang (ChunYangTai Art and Cultural Center).
