Huma Bhabha was born in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1962. For her sculptures, she drew inspiration from the ancient art of Gandhara. This art is characterised by a composite style that blends Greek and Indian influences. Bhabha was struck by the sculptures of meditating Buddhas, draped in robes, as well as by the ascetics with their protruding ribs.
Nicolas Engel, Chief Curator in charge of the Afghanistan and Pakistan collections at the Musée Guimet, invites you to discover the history of these sculptures in dialogue with Bhabha’s sculpture Don’t Cast a Shadow (2025), created for the exhibition.
