Fondation Giacometti

Annette Arm (1923-1993) met Giacometti in Geneva in 1943, and became his wife in 1949. From 1946, when she joined Giacometti in Paris to live with him in rue Hippolyte-Maindron, and until the end of the artist’s life, Annette was one of Alberto’s favourite models. The sheer quantity of sculptures, paintings and drawings – whether portraits, nudes or studies – is comparable only to those Alberto made of his brother Diego. In the paintings as in the sculptures, the expressiveness of the portrait sometimes goes beyond the resemblance in favour of a generic, universal representation of the human figure. In this painting, the face of the model is deformed by black and nervous strokes that hollow the eyes, mark the nose, the mouth, the forehead, as if to outline the shape of the skull beneath the head. The contrast between tender and luminous colours (pink, yellow) and the violence of the image, accentuates the expressive force of this portrait. Though the painting is not dated, the stylistic comparison with other paintings dated by the artist leads us to propose a date of around 1952. This painting has not been signed by the artist and was never exhibited in his lifetime.
