Fondation Giacometti

In December 1946, Giacometti published in the Swiss magazine “Labyrinthe” a text that freely associated, in the surrealist tradition, fragments of dream and real and/or imaginary facts, of today and earlier times. The nightmare of a threatening spider hanging by a thread from the ceiling was juxtaposed with the story of the recent death of a neighbour, who had suddenly reminded him of another death he had witnessed in 1921. This old memory came back with the power of an hallucination, in which the dead invaded the space and threatened the living, who had become motionless, with their mouths open and their eyes fixed. Taking up the device of the surrealist “Suspended Ball” in which the space is delimited by lines forming a cage, Giacometti intensified its disturbing character by having the tip of the nose coming out of the frame. The “Nose” is suspended in it like the enormous brown spider from the description of the dream. As observed by Agnès de la Beaumelle, the neck is treated like a revolver grip, and the nose becomes a barrel pointed at the spectator. Two plaster versions exist of that piece, one, polychrome, that was exhibited in 1948 at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, more barbaric in aspect and closer to the Oceanic sculpture (Fondation Giacometti, Zurich) and the one which is today at the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris, less harsh, whose nose is more slender, probably made around 1949, when Giacometti was preparing three exhibitions for 1950, one in New York, one in Paris (deferred until 1951) and one in Basel. It is from that second version that Giacometti made a third plaster that served for the bronze casting from 1964 onwards, first for the Fondation Maeght (inaugurated in 1964) and for the retrospectives of London and New York in 1965, showing the particular importance Giacometti attached to it within his creation.
