Fondation Giacometti

Annette Arm (1923-1993) met Giacometti in Geneva in 1943, and became his wife in 1949. From 1946, when she joined Giacometti in Paris to live with him in rue Hippolyte-Maindron, until the end of the artist’s life, Annette was one of Alberto’s favourite models. The sheer quantity of sculptures, paintings and drawings – whether portraits, nudes or studies – is comparable only to those Alberto made of his brother Diego. The model and the background are painted in the same tones of pinkish brown, the space and the relief being rendered by a web of vivid colours, lemon yellow, vermillion red, royal blue, emerald green. Giacometti tightens with successive alterations the frame around the figure until it fills almost the whole space. While the model, as was common for Giacometti, is represented full face, the perspective – suggested by slanted lines that quickly evoke the studio – is shifted towards the right, accentuating the depth and the movement of space that projects the model forward. This painting does not appear to have been exhibited in Giacometti’s lifetime.
