Fondation Giacometti

Annette Arm (1923-1993) met Giacometti in Geneva in 1943 and became his wife in 1949. From 1946, when she settled in Paris (she moved in to rue Hippolyte-Maindron in 1947) until the end of the artist’s life, Annette was one of Alberto’s favourite models. The sheer quantity of sculptures, paintings and drawings – whether portraits, nudes or studies – is comparable only to those Alberto made of his brother Diego. In this portrait, the figure of Annette is drawn in black, then coloured in grey, then reworked with white touches. The background is in an almost homogenous grey tone that does not fill the canvas right to the edges, leaving a white margin. The pictorial space is defined by a frame drawn by the artist. The dark tones of this portrait are present in many other paintings made at the beginning of the Sixties. The outline of the head comes from a multitude of approaches, as well as the details of the face, giving them an intense vibration. The model’s gaze, her eyes open wide, fixed straight ahead of her, is reminiscent of the frontal character of the Coptic funerary portraits that Giacometti greatly admired. This painting was exhibited in Giacometti’s lifetime in 1962 in Zurich with the title “Annette noire”, in 1964, within the “Bilanz Internationale Malerei seit 1950” group exhibition, at the Kunsthalle in Basel with the title “Portrait Annette” and in the artist’s retrospective in London and Humlebaek in 1965, with the title “Annette”. In the catalogues of these exhibitions, it is dated 1962.
