Fondation Giacometti

Annette Arm, the artist's wife, was Giacometti's main female model. Annette and Alberto met in Geneva in 1943. She was twenty years his junior and became his wife in 1949. Annette started sitting for the artist in 1946, when she moved in with him in Paris. From then on, she never stopped sitting for him, not only for portraits, but also for most of the female nudes made by the artist.
As in most of those nude paintings, Annette poses in the Parisian studio of rue Hippolyte-Maindron, whose furniture one recognizes, the stove, the lines of the walls, which give an idea of the perspective and construction of the space. The nude almost seems to levitate in the middle of the painting, in its static position, the arms stretched alongside the body and the gaze fixed. The brown, grey and ochre tones are broken by the red brush strokes used for the slippers.
Above the brown halo that surrounds the model, a first standing figure is still visible; its face is perceptible above Annette's head and the tip of her feet comes out of that halo. A frame, made of a simple black line at the edges of the canvas, surrounds everything represented. That frame and the standing figure below are visible in the photographs that Inge Morath published in the magazine Art News in May 1958.
Exhibited in Giacometti's lifetime only at the gallery Pierre Matisse in the year of its creation, the work is dated and signed in the bottom right corner.
