Fondation Giacometti

Alberto Giacometti met the publisher Tériade at the end of the Twenties and remained close all his life to the art publisher, whose magazine, Verve, presented in the issue 27-28 of December 1952 an article by the sculptor entitled “Mai 1920”. This same issue was illustrated with several reproductions of Giacometti’s works, but also two original lithographs, La rue, on page 29, and L’Arbre, on page 30. Three different versions of that same lithograph are known, and countless preparatory drawings on that theme that Giacometti had been preoccupied with since the end of the Forties. This work is one of the two non-published versions of L’Arbre. The composition presents a character in profile, a tiny sketch facing a huge tree that occupies the whole right part of the sheet. The work, a test trial, only presents the passage of a single colour on the sheet, the red colour. The published lithograph indeed presents five distinct colours, red, lemon yellow, mustard yellow, blue and green, each necessitating the creation by the artist of a separate drawing, transferred on a stone or a lithographic tinplate zinc. It is through the successive passage of the sheet of paper under those five colours that the printer can develop the complete lithograph.
