Pierre Loeb was the first gallery owner to offer Giacometti a contract in 1929, for one year. Giacometti remained a friend of the gallery owner, of whom he made several portraits in 1946 as well as in 1949 to prepare an etching that was to illustrate a text written by Loeb on figurative art. On this double-sided drawing, Alberto Giacometti made on the front a portrait of the gallery owner, sitting in an armchair, smoking a pipe, while the back presents several sketches for heads. The signature stamp that is to be found on the lower part of the front drawing was affixed by Annette Giacometti who wished to certify the drawings circulating on the market that were not signed. It seems she rapidly gave up on that idea, for only very few known drawings without any signature received the mark of that stamp, today kept at the Fondation Giacometti.
