Description

Alberto Giacometti often took his own brother Diego as his model, to make countless portraits, many created from memory. Exhibited in the artist’s lifetime at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York in December 1950, the work was reproduced and featured in the photography of the hanging in the frontispiece of the catalogue. Although that drawing was reproduced in a catalogue of the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York with the date 1950, it can nevertheless be linked to other heads in profile made in 1946 (a series of portraits of Diego, Pierre Loeb and Simone de Beauvoir). The date of 1950 corresponds to that of the entry of the drawing in the Pierre Matisse Gallery (archives of the gallery, The Morgan Library & Museum, New York).
