Description

Alberto Giacometti used to draw on all kinds of supports, books, magazines, newspapers and paper tablecloths, unrelentingly working on heads and female nudes from memory, but also making still life works or landscapes he had before his eyes, taking hold of the book he had in his pocket or the tablecloth of the restaurant where he was eating. This drawing, which represents a view of the few houses that Giacometti could see from the family home in Maloja, in the Canton of Grisons in Swizterland, is a motif one finds again and again on several of the artist’s landscapes with that characteristic profile of houses framing a road. The drawing, made with strokes repeated with a blue ballpoint pen, was done on the last page of a novel published in the Série Noire collection at Gallimard, that the artist used to read regularly, several other copies of which bear his drawings.
