Description

Giacometti's studio at 46 rue Hippolyte-Maindron, in the Alésia district near Montparnasse, is the central theme of his paintings and drawings from the period after the war. During those years, Giacometti painted not only portraits in which the model almost merges with the furniture, tools and works in his studio, but also paintings that represent a corner of the room, with works on which the artist was working at the time. Around 1950, Giacometti did at least 8 paintings representing works in his studio.
In this painting, the small studio stool is represented in the foreground, and slightly askew. The elongated head, similar to the one Giacometti sculpted between 1947 and 1950, occupies the centre of the painting. Next to the sculpture, on the small stool, the artist has drawn two big red fruits (probably apples) that break up the monochromatism of the painting. Behind the elongated head is a naked bust, visible on a pedestal, and canvases one can vaguely discern at the back. The painting is signed and dated 1950 in the artist's hand and the title “Still life in the studio” was given in his lifetime during the exhibition at Dallas' Museum of Contemporary Art in 1960.
