Une œuvre, un regard : "Giotto : un peintre à l’avant-garde de la révolution picturale en Italie au tournant des XIIIe et XIVe siècles"

Thomas Bohl
Paris, France
At the Institut Giacometti

Since Dante mentioned his name in the Divine Comedy at the beginning of the 14th century, Giotto has established himself as a tutelary figure in Italian painting. His contemporaries and early biographers hailed him as the father of the renaissance of naturalism and illusionism in painting. In the 15th century, the most important historians and critics, as well as artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, celebrated him. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the rediscovery of the art of the "primitives", Giotto captivated many painters who were sensitive to some of his iconographic inventions and his sense of narration. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was instead the novelty, the strength of the forms of expression invented by Giotto nearly 700 years earlier that fascinated some artists, including Alberto Giacometti and Giorgio Morandi.

Within the spaces of the exhibition, Thomas Bohl, curator of heritage in the department of paintings at the Louvre Museum, will present the main features of Giotto's work, and will confront them with some of the creations displayed in the exhibition.
