Lessons in Modernism and Alliance: Baghdad, Damascus, Paris, 1941–1944
This lecture explores the connections between artists from Iraq and the West, and revisits the attempts at dialogue by artists in Damascus, particularly through sketches found in the notebooks of several artists, all based in Baghdad at the time. These include Jamil Hamoudi, Jawad Selim, Jozef Czapski, and James Boswell. The first three studied in Paris, while Boswell, a British soldier, kept sketchbooks in Baghdad, offering a distinct perspective on British modernist art, in contrast to the French approach. Each of these artists maintained a unique relationship with Paris, regarded as the capital of artistic freedom.
