Entangled Modernisms
Artists, Mobilities, and a New Art Historiography in Paris: Studios as Places of Entanglement
In relation with Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada), the Courtauld Institute of Art, the École du Louvre, the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, the Institut Giacometti, and the Institut national d’histoire de l’art, this symposium connects the histories of artists from Asia, Africa, and Latin America who studied and worked in Paris between 1945 and 1989.
By identifying key figures, points of intersection, this collaborative research proposes a new analytical model. It enables scholars to visualise South–South connections, shifting the perspective on metropolitan centres: not as points of origin or global training grounds, but as spaces of intersection to shed light on the transcultural conditions of modern art.
It will enable us to think about these exchanges by observing them at three levels: political, pedagogical, and in the studios.
