Alberto Giacometti : The Measure of The World

From 11 October to 15 February 2026
Kunsthalle Bremen, Bremen

The first major retrospective devoted to Alberto Giacometti in Germany in over ten years, this exhibition highlights the importance of the question of man's place in the world in his work, particularly by examining his relationship with the environment and nature.

Giacometti understood modern man on the scale of humanity as a whole, thus extending German Romanticism's concern for man's place in his environment. This perspective, somewhere between the sublime and melancholy, highlights the artist's originality in representing human existence, questioning the size of sculptures, the problem of vision, loneliness and wandering.

The exhibition also addresses underestimated issues such as Giacometti's questioning of the link between time and space, his understanding of the relationship between man and nature, for which he established a system of equivalences where busts are mountains, heads are stones, and standing figures are trees.
