Lola and Germán Cueto: journeys of two Mexican modernist artists in Paris
Multidisciplinary Mexican artists Lola and Germán Cueto were a couple who explored different plastic forms and aesthetics, the former in the field of figurative art, the latter in abstraction. While living in Montparnasse from 1927 to 1932, they frequented the avant-garde circles of Cubism and the cosmopolitan circles formed by Latin American, European, and Russian artists.
Their stay in Paris broke with certain representations of the circulation of foreign artists at the beginning of the 20th century, and their artistic trajectory reflects the relational and plastic dynamics of the avant-garde. The reception of their works testifies to the way non-Western artists were viewed in Paris in the 1930s.
