The Swiss artist Kurt Seligmann moved to Paris in 1929, where he was confronted with a multitude of possibilities. He appreciated the cosmopolitan atmosphere and persistently pursued his goal—metaphorically speaking—of planting his own tree in the “forest” of modernities.
After settling permanently in New York in 1939, he maintained a connection with Paris, both concretely and conceptually. This lecture seeks to trace Seligmann’s position in relation to the modern movements and to reflect on our own relationship to them.
