Joaquìn Torres-García, in Paris

By Arnauld Pierre
Paris , France
The École des modernités

The cosmopolitan career of Joaquín Torres-García, an artist of Uruguayan origin who trained in Barcelona, was marked by many steps in Paris. The most significant took place between 1926 and 1932; in a few years, he created connections that put him at the heart of the reconfiguration of the major currents of abstraction and established the plastic and visual vocabulary that will end up characterising his work: that of “constructive universalism.”

This lecture aims to trace its origins and context, but also to discuss its main aesthetic and ideological issues, on the cusp of a turning point in the history of modernity.
