Alberto Giacometti. L'Humanité Absolue

Cité Miroir de Liège
Liège, Belgique
Off site

The exhibition "Alberto Giacometti - L'Humanité absolue" offers a reading of the artist's post-war work through the lens of its historical context and th existentialist vision of Jean-Paul Sartre who Alberto Giacometti met around 1940. If the philosopher has critiques Giacometti's work several times, it's first and foremost his work "In search of absolute", published at the occasion of the first monographic exhibition  of the artist in New York, 1948, that comes to mind first. Le philosopher declared that Giacometti does not try  to represent the being, but rather the exterior appearance of his sitters. Sculpting them from a relative distance, he accepts simultaneously realtivity and fins the absolute.

Tête d'homme IV, Fondation Giacometti, Paris

Placing man at the centre of his research, Giacometti works restlessly on the human figure, and notably on the motif of the Standing Woman. Forever dissatisfied, he would never stop going back to these motifs and constantly rework them. Oftentimes, with the same models, namely his spouse Annette and his brother Diego. He would ask his Swiss family and such intellectuals as Simone de Beauvoir, to sit for him,

Co-created by the Giacometti Foundation and the Cité Miroir in Belgium, "Alberto Giacometti- L'Humanité absolue" is the first monographic exhibition of the artsit in Liège. WIth an original scenography underlinnig the singular character of the Cité Miroir's architecture, the installation holds 35 bronze artworks from the FOndation Giacometti's collection. The selection, covering 30 years, shines a light on the post-war period. The sculptures are accompanied by an exceptionnal selection of lithographies from the posthumous and mythical publication of Paris Sans Fin. This publication, on which Giacometti was working from 1959 until his death, reads as a tribute to his favourite city and allows us to discover the humanity within his daily life.

Generously illustrated by the sculptures and lithographies of the exhibiton, the catalog will deepen the understanding of Giacometti's work through a biography, an explanation of the historical context, and existentialist principles via a corpus of exclusive essays.
