ALBERTO GIACOMETTI / ANDRÉ BRETON. Surrealist friendships
Giacometti spent five years with the Surrealist group (1930-1935), during which time he formed lasting friendships with Breton and other artists and intellectuals of the movement. The exhibition brings together several emblematic works from Giacometti's Surrealist period and those of his fellow artists: Hans Arp, Victor Brauner, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Meret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy, as well as documents relating to Claude Cahun, René Crevel, Lise Deharme, Paul Eluard, Georges Hugnet, Jacqueline Lamba and Tristan Tzara.
This exhibition sheds new light on the artistic, intellectual and friendly world around these two major figures of 20th century art.
A new exhibition presented at the Institut Giacometti, in collaboration with the Association Atelier André Breton and the Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'art moderne.
Curators: Serena Bucalo-Mussely, curator Fondation Giacometti.
In collaboration with Constance Krebs, Editorial Director, Association Atelier André Breton.
3. The surrealist experiment
Giacometti joined André Breton’s Surrealist movement in 1931, as an active member of Breton’s group, Giacometti in no time stood out as one of its rare sculptors. Despite his being expelled in February 1935, surrealist procedures continued to play an important part in his creative work: dreamlike visions, montage and assemblage, objects with metaphorical functions, and magical treatment of the figure.
