The Giacometti Institute welcomes the artist Douglas Gordon, a major figure in the contemporary art scene who has conceived an entirely original exhibition, the result of his vis-à-vis with Alberto Giacometti. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1966, Douglas Gordon lives and works in Berlin, Glasgow and Paris.
As a multidisciplinary artist, his practice includes making video and film, drawing, sculpture and installation. His work on the distortion of time, the tension between opposite forces and dualities like life and death, good and evil, concur with Giacometti’s questioning on the human condition.
For this exhibition, Gordon Douglas made a series of original pieces in connection with littleknown or rarely exhibited sculptures and drawings by Alberto Giacometti. These new works mark a new phase in Gordon’s work, and shed another light on Giacometti’s oeuvre.
Curator: Christian Alandete
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1966, Douglas Gordon is a multidisciplinary artist working on video, drawing, sculpture and installation. His work on the distortion of time and the tension between opposite forces (life and death, good and evil, blessed and damned, captive or free, etc.) share common ground with Giacometti’s questioning on the human condition. Taking hold of the characteristics of the domestic space occupied by the Giacometti Institute, Douglas Gordon imagines a dialogue between his work and Giacometti’s work. For the occasion, the artist has made a series of original works never exhibited before that will be presented with some sculptures and drawings by Giacometti that are little-known or have never been shown previously in public.
After her performance at Moderna Museet in 2021 for Swedish television SVT as part of the exhibition "Giacometti. Face to Face", the voguing dancer Silva Prodigy will give a new performance in Paris as part of the exhibition "Alberto Giacometti / Douglas Gordon. the morning after".
In partnership with the Swedish Institute.
The Institut Giacometti, in collaboration with Gobelins, l'École de l'image, presents the result of a educational project carried out during Douglas Gordon's residency at the Institut Giacometti. Imagining the encounter between the art of Alberto Giacometti and that of Douglas Gordon, the students of the "motion design" course take you on a journey into their worlds.
The Institut Giacometti is once again taking part in the European Night of the Museums with a night-time opening from 6:00pm to 11pm.
On this occasion, the exhibition will be activated by two performances: "Figures" by Carole Douillard and "Beauty Shots" by John Cornu.
