Fondation Giacometti

Alberto Giacometti connaît l'éditeur Tériade dès la fin des années vingt, et reste toute sa vie proche de l'éditeur d'art, dont la revue, Verve, accueille, dans le numéro 27-28 de décembre 1952, un article du sculpteur, intitulé "Mai 1920". Ce même numéro est illustré de plusieurs reproduction d'oeuvres de Giacometti, mais également de deux lithographies originales, La Rue, page 29, et L'Arbre, page 30.
Trois versions différentes de cette dernière lithographie sont connues, et de nombreux dessin préparatoires, sur ce thème, qui occupe Giacometti depuis la fin des années 1940.
Cette oeuvre est l'une des deux versions non publiées de L'Arbre.
La composition présente un personnage de profil, minuscule esquisse face à un arbre immense qui occupe toute la partie droite de la feuille. L'oeuvre, une épreuve d'essai, ne présente le passage que d'une seule matrice sur la feuille, celle de la couleur rouge. La lithographie publiée présente en effet cinq couleurs distinctes, rouge, jaune citron, jaune moutarde, bleu et vert, dont chacune a nécessité la création par l'artiste d'un dessin indépendant, reporté sur une pierre ou un zinc lithographique. C'est par le passage successif de la feuille sous ces cinq matrices que l'imprimeur peut révéler la lithographie complète.
